- Deb draws a crowd whenever and wherever she walks/hikes: Two weeks ago, it was two 30-something sisters-in-law. Deb played pick-up sticks with them on a hillside, then had them over for tea last week, and they invited her to their home tomorrow. Yesterday, it was three young men from the Nursing program who stopped to have a conversation with Deb on her walk around the loop. Earlier this week on a hike with two other young female expats, some kids got their attention by throwing sizable rocks in their direction. Always a story when Deb comes back from a walk/hike. (She took a bad tumble a few weeks ago as the trail can be very slippery with loose dirt.)
- The greatest joyful news: our friend’s 11-year-old son came in second place in the nation’s Spelling Bea (Bee? I’m out). For this precious young boy, he literally fell to his knees, with tears falling and thanked God for being with him and helping him. Next, he will be competing in the All-Africa Spelling Bee in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia–all expenses paid!
- Training Days 3 & 4 this week. Due to bike-breakdowns the first two training days, I determined there is more than one way to “tease the monkeys” (skin a cat), I began doing the two-kilometer loop around the village so that if there is a breakdown, I simply walk it to the repairman at the bottom of the hill. The loop is 1 kilometer up and then a breeze. (But Houston, we have a problem: at nearly 64, there seems to be aches from top to “bottom;” I literally could not sit on the bike seat the last two hours of training yesterday.
- The Bike Malawi trip begins on July 16th. The map is included, below. A Reverend from Lilongwe has worked hard to organize and publicize the Project, arranging media interviews and aiding with many other logistics–thank you Rev. Chunga!
- Wednesday was Winter Solstice here in Malawi. (Not one drop of rain since the end of Rainy Season two months ago.)
- Thank you for your watchfulness, kindnesses, prayers and givings.
