(SATURDAY, JULY 15)
Just a 5-hour drive from Mazuzu to Karonga, where Rev and Mrs Nyondo opened their home and hearts to us and provided such wonderful, caring fellowship and nourishment. The road from Mzuzu was absolutely atrocious, and would be treacherous to bike, leading us to decide to change our bike route tomorrow from using the same road back to Mzuzu, to using an all-gravel-and-dirt road along the Lake that cannot be traversed by vehicles, so Hamilton and I will be going solo from Chilumba to Nkhata Bay–a whopping 165km. It will definitely be the longest day of riding by far, but it may also be the most eye-opening as we will not only be biking along one of the largest lakes in the world but will also be going through 10s of small fishing villages who have seldom seen a white person biking through and sometimes stopping for nourishment in their villages. So, get ready for pictures and stories from the road that begins today.

Joyous Send-Off Friday Morning
Sat in the back of the truck for the 8-hour drive from Nkhoma to Mzuzu. The long and eventually chilly ride was met with an gracious, generous accommodation provided by the Synod of Livingstonia and Visit and pray by the General Secretary of the Synod at 8pm.

Sickening, Sobering Sight
On one of my training pedals to a nearby junction this past week, 15kms from Nkhoma, I looked up to see, about 1/4 mile ahead on the opposite side of the road, several bodies tumbling on the pavement just behind a moving truck. I could not believe my eyes and didn’t know exactly what I had seen.
I thought it might be a few young boys who hopped a ride by climbing onto the metal framing on the back of the truck. Maybe they had voluntarily decided to j…

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”–Philippians 4:6.
But I am anxious. Have mercy, O Lord. I’m not without hope and conviction and trust, but I do feel some anxiety about the next few weeks in relation to the Bike Malawi endeavor that begins in earnest this Friday! (For those who may not know, I’m trying to assist multiple mission organizations raise new donors and new dona…

The Gap Between Choice and Necessity: a.k.a. Lazarus and Me
As you might imagine, being here reminds me of Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16: Deb and I are living in one of the nicer accommodations in the village — not just having running water but hot water! within a very nice tiled shower room; electricity, a stove and a refrigerator; screens in all the windows keeping out the pesky mosquitoes; a landscaper maintaining the flowers and plants; housekeeper…

Tidbits
- Deb draws a crowd whenever and wherever she walks/hikes: Two weeks ago, it was two 30-something sisters-in-law. Deb played pick-up sticks with them on a hillside, then had them over for tea last week, and they invited her to their home tomorrow. Yesterday, it was three young men from the Nursing program who stopped to have a conversation with Deb on her walk around the loop. Earlier this week on a hike with two other young female expats, some kids got their attention… See more

Maiden Voyage in Malawi
Just went on first bike ride since August 1, 2021, when I rode with a small team from NJ into NYC, including Dan, who met up with us for the last day of the x-country trip. Went just 25km today to see how it would feel. Hoped to do 50km but, ye ‘ol flat tire tradition from 2021 returned. Finished with a flat the last day of that trip and started with one today (grrrrr).
But as Deb is coaching me, “Let’s try something new. Let’s try expecting flats,…
